Article: [senco-forum] the COP beats the computer (was 50 years top ten)

I'd agree with the list in many ways but what about the use of TAs and especially trained TAs in our classrooms. A good TA is worth her (yes I know but they are usually female) weight in gold and they allow for inclusion in mainstream for many pupils who could not manage without. Two of my former pupils with physical disabilities have gone to university because they had TA support in mainstream. A pupil with ASD is now taking A levels because of their help. Many pupils with dyslexia are in the groups they should be in because additional adult support has helped them to be better organised, to have notes and to learn to revise. I certainly want well trained TAs in my list of top ten improvements.

The results of the 50 years survey so far places the SEN Code of Practice in
first place as the most significant development in SEN with the computer a
close second. The rest are in no particular order until you vote for them.
I’m so with the thought of what the Mode 3 CSEs could have been especially
for the SEN pupils. Interesting that nobody has mentioned inclusion in
mainstream schools or the DDA.

Your continued votes/suggestions please.

1. 1994 and 2001 Code of Practice
2. The computer

3. 1981 (SEN) Education Act
3. SENCo's in every school
3. Special Educational Needs Tribunal (LEA accountability) in 1994

4. The 1978 Warnock report
4. Synthesised speech technologies
4. Professional SEN qualifications
4. Mode 3 CSEs (ah, what might have been)
4. The concept of inclusion...an unfinished development.
4. Ending the legal category of 'unteachable' children and the segregation
of them into Health Service 'Training Centres' in the 70s has to be the
major breakthrough.
4. The increase in number in all those wonderful EPs of course
4. Becta
