Mary You agree with much of what I has said but tell me , what specifically have I said that you disagree with so that I can respond appropriately! I take nothing in a debate personally. I don't regard it as 'unamicable' (!) if someone disaagress with me. No debate is possible without disagreemnt. It is only when the logic is ignored and the personality attacked that debate is soured. There are those who believe that SP teaching for all children in all schools is fundamental to the achievement of virtually full literacy. They have very precise beliefs including the belief that sight vocabulary does not exist and can therefore play no part in the reading process. They believe fundamentally that the case for SP to be imposed on all children in all schools has been proven. I regard such people as fundamentalists and although I have been a supporter of SP for decades, my beliefs are very different from theirs. Their mail exchanges are like the minutes of a mutial admiration society. They are not open to debate - they only accept agreement with their cause. There is SP and as far as they are concerned that is the end of the matter. This is not what I think - this is what they say themselves. I regard such people's views as very damaging to the SP cause.
