I have been a part time, non class based SENCo in 2 similair schools. In my current school I am on the SMT. Although this does mean an extra 1 hour meeting each week, For me I think it is usually time well spent. If you can ensure that the needs of SEN children, TAs, staementing constraints etc are considered during the decision making process you can save yourself a lot of time and effort later. However this only works if you are given time to consider the issues. There are too many SENCos out there with little or no non contact time, in that scenario I found it possible only to survive and another meeting would have been impossible. So, if you are asked to go on SMT, make sure you get time as well as money for it! Kate B |
