Article: [senco-forum] pupil with autism

We used 'I am special' with a year 8 pupil at her parents' request - they had talked to her about everything and needed backup support.
Teh current favourite of my year 9 ASD boys is 'Freaks, Geeks and Asperger Syndrome' which they both feel sound 'very like me' and gives us opportunities for discussion. In both these cases, the boys know about ASD and are actively looking for an understanding of the condition.
If I've learned one thing about people with ASD over the years it is that every one is different and personality is the most important factor in how well they can manage in a mainstream school with support.
Also - members of this Forum have increased my understanding of how to work with pupils with ASD a huge amount. Thanks to you all.

I am Special, as far as I remember is for teenagers
and adults.

There was a resource by Carol Gray called "All about
me" but I don't know if it is still available.

The NAS has some info available for
cares/professionals and the child.

See
