Article: [SENco-forum] Help - inclusion

My advice to a pre school who suggested that as a "resasonable" compromise
would be that it's only reasonable if the parent is able and wiling to
attend otherwise I would view this as unreasonable and marks your child out
as different and means he can't attend. This means careful negotiation with
parents so that they don't fell you are saying no/

I would think Sharon that the council paperwork is potentially open to
challenge as surely someone else can be trained in how to support your son
if stung? Unless you feel you want to be there.

The one that really annoys me is the suggestion by a number of settings/
schools that a reasonable compromise to admitting children still in nappies
to Nursery/ Reception or Pre school would be for parents to come in as and
when to change a child. The guidance from Leicestershire on this is
excellent and can be found at

http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/eyfs/resources/downloads/p0001663.pdf

While this isn't the same issue is worth a read as the principals apply
otherwise look at the DDA document

http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/eyfs/resources/downloads/p0000843.pdf

Which while EY based again clearly outlines the principals clearly.

The time factor clearly works in Linda's favour this time but at the very
least you should be looking to make plans for the future so that you have
access to staff and funds for inclusion (LA's work differently but either
they or local charities can usually help.) for future holidays.

My son has a wasp allergy. Council paperwork says he can only attend the
club if I go. This seems a sensible compromise. Explain you willingness to
help, but lack of budget at this late stage to provide additional
helpers/carers. Parent may have access to other funds or be able to get
support from existing carers, just in a different location.

I run a holiday club in the summer holidays and have just { minutes ago} had
an enquiry from a parent with a child with severe mental and physical
disabilities ... whilst I would love to accomodate him .. I would need
another member of staff and that may not be possible with two weeks to go
and we have no extra funding anyway ... how do I stand legally? can I
refuse ? can I access any extra funds? I don't really want to.
