Article: [senco-forum] new senco help!

Hi Amanda
  Good name for a SENCO!
  My top tips are:
know how your LA's system works and who you can call on locally
talk to parents at every step
make any advice very practical for teachers
know that what parents ask for and what teachers can do in a classroom may not be compatible (this is based on experience!) and the child in your school will get the best you can do if the class teacher is 'on board'

If you want a quick list of practical resources, I'd say look at David Fulton publications.
  http://www.routledge.com/education/fultonresources.asp

I'd also get How to Survive and Succeed as a SENCo in the Primary School (Paperback) by Veronica Birkett http://www.amazon.co.uk/Survive-Succeed-SENCo-Primary-School/dp/1855033119/ref=sr_1_2/026-3587680-8182824?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1184133348&sr=8-2
I've got the secondary one and it is very useful.

And - the most important - the best teachers are those who can also 'have a life' outside school so keep your work-life balance!
  All the best.
