How many parents even KNOW all the phoneme grapheme correspondences.  They might be able to teach a child the 'alphabet' correspondences, but that only covers 23 phonemes (k, q,& x are redundant as they represent /k/ & /ks/ which are already covered by other letters).  That's 21phonemes short of the 44 and about 140 graphemes short of the commonly used ones.

How many trained teachers even know all of the phoneme/grapheme correspondences?
