Phil says "LEAs should be abolished and all the money given to schools and the schools made fully accountable." Thats exactly how I work! I have long experience of privately tutoring older poor readers (9 to 14) but, unlike working teachers, I am in a position of being able to select those whose principal handicap is short term memory deficit, irrespective of the extent of their reading deficit and I guarantee, at the very least, substantial remediation of their difficulty. I work by being paid in advance with a six month, post dated cheque. This cheque is passed for payment only if and when the parent agrees that my guarantee has been fulfilled. Put another way, if I don't deliver, I don't get paid. Over many years of working in this way, not once has a cheque been countermanded. STM is not about memory - it is about admittance to memory and when that function is impaired, only specific solutions are truly remedial. I thought everybody knew that. Eddie Carron |
