My understanding of deaf reading is that when they read a word it is done with reference to the muscle movements in signing. I have a reference somewhere and will see if I can trace it amongst the haystack. The brain is indeed very flexible and yes the learner needs to know that he / she can learn so sometimes a little 'engineering' is fine.
