My son did "Socially Speaking" after completing "Time to Talk" earlier in his school life. His social skills have really improved. This year the whole school have taken part in SEAL -social, emotional and literacy -projects and assemblies etc., and this has had a really big impact. Being able to understand the process of turn taking in conversations, how to improve listening skills, to make positive comments as well as learning to empathise has increased positive interactions and put in place positive strategies to de-escalate situations. Being able to do this in real life it then becomes easier to do in literacy tasks when trying to understand what comes next in a scenario or what a character might do. My son has less problems with taking things literally, is learning that just telling the truth is not always what is required (!) and likewise not to blurt out every thought that runs through his head, but it is slow going sometimes. All this appears to be the result of developmental delay that you find with dyslexia (thought it was Autism originally), but still has made it impossible for him to have any real friends until Year 6. He has just taken part in the Leaver's assembly this morning and after spending a week attending High school part time we can feel a little more confident that he will survive the transfer.
