One project I do every year with a group of 16 Year 10 pupils is for them to plan and organise a trip for a day. We go to London but it could be anywhere. They fill in the school insurance form, write the letter to parents and get it typed in the office, arrange its printing and we co-sign the letter. Another two open a school finance account for money; others arange the lunches for those on free school meals; others do risk assesment; look at train timetables; work out how the tube stsyem works and research the places we are going to. On the trip itself they have to follow the maps, recount to peers important features of anything we see, for example this year one could tell us all about Traitors Gate, another about how Anne Boleyn was executed another about the Glbe Theatre (he was interested in Docotor Who so he linked that in), one explained about what the Horseguards guard and othes could tell us who lived in which house in Downing Stret and another the names of all the party leaders. This year as we stood at the station waiting for the train one girl who seems aware of very little said"Tony Blair isn't Prime Minister anymore is he? It's Gordon Brown." It was the day after the change over but because she had to do a fact file on Gordon Brown it had caught her attention. In September we will do a presentation on the trip and invite the Headteacher and others and the pupils will make cakes and organise tea and coffee and host the whole thing. It does need staff in school on board of course so that when they go to the finance office the person there knows they are coming and explains things simply etc. I don't know whether you could do some project like that with your group. I have pupils for time during the week ( 18 lessons for 1 boy) when they cannot go into mainstream lessons. I want the activities to be fun learning. Ideally it will be activities which develop their interests which I can justify as learning by listing the learning objectives in schemes of work. Things like cooking and CDT come to mind( for when I can use appropriate rooms) but any pointers in the right direction for me would be welcome.
