Article: [senco-forum] spanish puzzle

Dear All,
I don't know if anyone has any ideas but...
Our head of Modern Foreign Languages has a bit of a problem with a yr 10 girl currently doing Spanish for GCSE. Her parents are English but both able to speak Spanish and the family lived out in Spain until the girl was 5 yrs old. At this point she was fluent in Spanish and apparently - as revealed at this week's parents' meeting - was teased at school when she returned to UK for speaking Spanish. The girl has opted for Spanish rather than French but is really not making progress and is behind others in the class who have had no prior exposure to the language. She is likely to achieve Cs at least in her subjects so it's not a question of intelligence. My colleague suspects it may be more of a psychological reaction to whatever she has gone through. She can understand listening tapes etc but says she can't speak the language and I think she seems to be refusing to make any real attempt.
     I'm at a loss - any ideas??
  yours in hope
  Janet
