First, thank you all for the great suggestions regarding TAs-I have been
reading the e-mails with great interest(having had my share of troubles) and
  I am definitely going to try some of them.

Now for something completely different: we have just admitted a new pupil in
year 9, from Afghanistan, no English at all and never been to school before
in her life (those Taliban guys didn't think it was a good idea to educate
girls). We don't have many beginner bilinguals in our school and Pushto is
not a very commonly spoken language, we have another two or three fluent
Pushto speakers. Does anyone know of any Afghan community group(s) I could
get in touch with?
