Article: [senco-forum] Unqualified teacher

One of my colleagues has a bit of a problem. She was a teacher in India
years ago but never bothered to qualify here. She started with us as a TA but we
very quickly realised her potential and she is now EMA manager as well as SEN
teacher. She achieved a distiction on the STA course then went on to do the
OCR certificate and is now planning to do the diploma. The problem is that
apparently you can't work as an unqualified teacher for more than 4 years. After
that you have to qualify. She does not want to be a class teacher so does
not want to get QTS. This means she will return to the status of TA which will
have an effect on her status in the school, where she is advising teachers on
how to manage EAL/SEN children, It also means that HLTAs are in effect
'above' her. I have suggested she does HLTA which she would easily get just for
the status. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Many thanks
