As I understand it the HLTA can be used a leap to teacher status via a long route and this would certainly put her above TAs. In fact I have made our EMA manager sign up to the course for the very reason she needs to have 'clout' when advising teachers about what they could do better! For HLTA there is a very strict set of criteria to complete including working with a whole class, which in secondary can be more problematic. However a whole class is determined by the Head and we intend to get round this by allocating 1/2 a class for PSHE for a year Susie -----Original Message----- From: senco-forum-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk [mailto:senco-forum-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk] On Behalf Of Janrolnick at aol.com Sent: 06 June 2007 18:17 To: senco-forum at lists.becta.org.uk Subject: [senco-forum] Unqualified teacher[Scanned] One of my colleagues has a bit of a problem. She was a teacher in India years ago but never bothered to qualify here. She started with us as a TA but we very quickly realised her potential and she is now EMA manager as well as SEN teacher. She achieved a distiction on the STA course then went on to do the OCR certificate and is now planning to do the diploma. The problem is that apparently you can't work as an unqualified teacher for more than 4 years. After that you have to qualify. She does not want to be a class teacher so does not want to get QTS. This means she will return to the status of TA which will have an effect on her status in the school, where she is advising teachers on how to manage EAL/SEN children, It also means that HLTAs are in effect 'above' her. I have suggested she does HLTA which she would easily get just for the status. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
