Conference: Do the right thing: On relationships and sexual health for young people with learning disabilities, Nottingham One-day conference and workshops Thursday June 28, 2007 Nottingham Gateway Hotel Chaired by: Prof Penny Standen, Professor of Health Psychology and Learning Difficulties, University of Nottingham The conference is dedicated to the memory and work of Ann Craft who pioneered good practice on relationships and sexual health for young people with learning disabilities, and who died 10 years ago this year. Her enormous contribution, working from Nottingham, is the inspiration for the Ann Craft Trust based in the city and is enshrined in a revised edition of her teaching resource Living your Life, published by Brook. What's right for each child with learning disabilities is a major concern for professionals seeking to support the emotional and sexual development of young people. But, too often forgotten within that process are these young people's rights to sexual health, relationships and sexuality. It's an area where young people with learning disabilities often do not get the same opportunities, education, support and services as do their non-disabled peers. Unless we create positive, proactive opportunities for young people with learning disabilities to form friendships, have relationships, receive high quality PSHE, and access services in safe, supportive communities we continue to fail them. Supported by the Department of Health, and presented by Brook in partnership with The Shepherd School, Nottingham, and the Ann Craft Trust, Do the right thing is an important conference opportunity for professionals working with young people with learning disabilities to explore the issues, share knowledge and take away practical examples of how law, policy and best practice can be replicated in their own settings.
