The LEA has banding descriptors for each category which seem quite stringent though I must admit that occasionally we get a pupil with a Statement and I can't understand why. In those cases after a year I gently suggest to parents that we ask for it to be discontinued, when I reassure that we will make sure their needs are still met I get an OK. As for those coming in September four are physical difficulties, one Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy - and quite poorly, one wheelchair user with an unknown dystrophy type and twins with Kearns Sayer syndrome, diabetes and arthritis. Three have very significant behaviour problems - I wonder about how two of them will manage. One Autistic Spectrum. Two complex. Five with speech and language problems - one speaks only in single word utterances, one almost a selective mute (though we have three other pupils in school who are selective mutes without other major learning needs) The last three seem much more starightforward with MLD working at P levels and Level 1. The odd thing is that other pupils will come with needs almost as great as some of these. Our intake is about 410 this year so maybe that puts it in context. So sorry for the delay in replying to this thread. 18 statements into Year 7 sounds alot but I was wondering what the Statementing criteria is in your LA. Only pupils with complex needs get Statements now so this year I have 7 statements (2 pupils with Down Syndrome, 3 with Autism, one of those particularly severe, one with global development delay and communication needs, one with cerebral palsy which affects mobility, speech and learning) but another 25 on School Action Plus some of whom also have significant needs (severe dyslexia, Aspergers, general learning difficulties etc etc) but have not been given a Statement. It is getting difficult to generalise because of different LA policies. Must get back to reading the 399 mails that are left! Keep up the good work and the emails!
