Hi Barbara, Well, that's my impression too. I do use a book called "Auditory Processing Activities" (from Ann Arbor, about £30) which is packed with all sorts of activities for different aspects of auditory processing. I run several little groups which I call "Listening Learners" and I try to teach the children that listening is an active process, it doesn't just happen. They have to hear what is being said, construct some meaning that makes sense to them (or "try to make a picture" of what has been said), and then judge whether or not it seems like something they can believe. I also talk to them about the "wobbly shelf idea" of Ann Henderson's (i.e. the capacity of working memory is finite and when it gets overloaded the whole lot "falls off the shelf") and I encourage them to use rehearsal. The children absolutely love the activities, but how can I tell if I'm doing any good? Are their really any materials which will improve a person's working memory. Only strategies or "skills to support" seem to have any transferable effect to me. Barbara |
