Don't agree here Janice - well not for the kid I've picked up ( group of 5 -bottom readers one side of year-approx 100+ kids each side of timetable - all scoring 6.05- but for 4 of them I've advancd thro to silent e spelling and to page 140+/- toe by toe for reading and onto level 2 lexia ) unfortunately the 5th of the group didn't have sound letter correspondance nor anything else - lowsy visual memory as well as auditory memory, even reversed u and n and also w and m So for me (having thrown my brickbats at his primary intervention) I'm solemnly working my way -ignoring reversals which are improving - thro initial consonant blends which he can sound out (as you can get enough practice at cvcs as well this way-and I got bored with them!) and in competitive games can approach fluency -this is going to take a long time -my questions are was he ready for this earlier or have I just struck him at the time when he can take this on board - when he's not behaving up to expectations for someone who has failed for 7 years (rare as he wants to learn but finds an hour very long!) or its an afternoon lesson For the other 4 kids I teach at the same time I'm working my way with digressions for syllables, segmenting etc whilst following structured phonic progression ie what you (Janice) said as I'm only too aware that these kids have failed forever!
