My ex-husband was sent back a year at the age of 16 - purely because he had lived in Australia and needed a chance to catch up with the curriculum. He was appalled and, despite going on to be an academic high achiever (though a complete idiot in every other area of life :-D ) it always irritated him. Current fiance (and non-idiot) was also sent back a year, but this was at the age of 5 and agreed between his mother and school, as he was simply not able to cope. He never particularly noticed a difference and also sailed through the education system.
  Clearly, it's a matter of reasons,timing and handling. I would like my 6-year-old to go back a year as there are numerous sound reasons for this course of action. I wonder why some of us are so vehemently opposed? 
   
  Personally, I would love to be back-lifed to my O levels - but you can't have everything can you?
