Those that can learn to type do, but there are some who can't. Two boys who spring to mind, one in year 10 has ASD and is Dyspraxic. His dyspraxia is such that his coordination with a keyboard is as poor as his hand writing (despite years of lessons to learn to type). His ASD prevents him from being creative in finding alternatives. His need to spell everyword painstainkingly and acurately means he has a writing speed of less than 8 words a minute and a typing speed of 6! The child i am enquiring for is equally ASD. Scribing produces inteligent and high level answers becuase you take away the need to concentrate on spelling. And dictation software is not the answer either due to their ASD and speech impediments. As your post said 'for those that are able'. Neither of these are. It will aid them in so many areas, such as creative writing, planning and organisation as well as taking the pressure off if they're caught up in spellings and will aiding independent learning.
