Article: [SENco-forum] Read Regular Font

Barrington Stoke use the Sassoon Primary font - is that what you were
thinking of? I like it because it is unfussy and resembles a child's own
early letters. Except I could wish the ascender were a bit taller on the "t"
perhaps.

The actual typeface can be viewed at:
http://www.readregular.com/english/space.html

and I prefer this 'space' version. It would be good for dyslexics with
visual problems. I would have preferred an 'f' that went under the line as
this can be flipped to look like a 't'. Nothing is perfect.

Font choice is very personal. My daughter who has severe dyslexia
definitely found it easier to read 'clean' well spaced type faces chosen for
some books aimed at those with dyslexia (company escapes me).

She went through a phase of 14 point Comics Sans (very large) but now uses
Times New Roman.

There is definitely a stage where even spaced or larger spaced letters and
lines really help, but seeing as this option is not available children seem
to choose a bigger type in order to get more space! Hence the font not
being so important once they get to grips with reading.

Although well publicised, ReadRegular is only available to publishers,
and, indeed, so far, the actual typesetting has been done by the author
as far as I am aware. We have been trying to get a copy to evaluate
since it was published, some years ago. (I'm sorry, we need to edit the
word "recent").

I am not aware of any objective research evaluating the relative
"dyslexia friendliness" of the different fonts mentioned on our website
at http://www.dyslexic.com/fonts, so the views are subjective. Lexia
Readable is the only font that I am aware of that:
** has been specifically designed for dyslexia,
** is moderately thoroughly executed and
** is available (free, indeed).

I don't think Red Regular Font available as yet -- but other dyslexia
friendly fonts appear to be available on free trial under various
googled threads. Brendan King

I found this on the dyslexic.com website.

Recently Natascha Frensch, a graphic designer at the Royal College of
Art, has designed a font specifically for dyslexic readers, taking into
account the issues discussed above. There are examples of Read Regular
on her web site at www.readregular.com and the children's publisher
Chrysalis is now using it for two-thirds of the 150 children's titles it
brings out every year.
