Article: [SENco-forum] White UK Heritage Boys

I prefer 'dual heritage' to 'mixed race' but would prefer no label at all.

A black African (her choice) neighbour of mine (born in Guyana and only
their for 2 years) asked how my brother (half brother - not my choice of
label) viewed himself - black or white. I said he did not consider himself
either and she was outraged. I pointed to two swings in my garden and asked
her what she saw. She said a yellow swing and an orange swing. I told her
I saw a child's swing and a toddler swing seat. She would not accept that
the first thing I noted was the differing and equally valid functionality of
the swings rather than their colour.

Labels are good if they give positive info that gets the most out of, or
for, the 'labelee' (i.e. my daughter says she gained a lot from knowing she
had dyslexia) but I think we are sometimes better off without them.

Whilst I agree with everything else you say about the
unecessary replacement of perfectly acceptable terms such as
race'. I feel I should point out that the first time I
heard the term 'Dual Heritage' was a few years ago from
parents, some friends of ours described their daughter this
way.
