Article: [SENco-forum] Identification of dyslexia

I still wrestle with this one. I liked the idea of 'discrepancy' because it
helped to show that my children had needs that needed support, but I have
also seen a child with GLD (low IQ) and reversal of B/D and other problems
to indicate dyslexia.

Supporting dyslexia with multisensory programmes works with few exceptions
who are so hampered as to need 1:1. It also works with GLD children so why
not do this & make all learning more accessible. It is heading that way
with 'best practice' from successful schools, or Thinking and Multiple
Intelligence classrooms/VAK aware and multisensory teaching being access for
'personalised learning' - only it will take too long to reach those already
in the system.

On the point of coloured lenses - my optometrist is dead against them for
all but the most severe scoptic sensitivity(very few). She recommends
colour overlays about £5 each.

We have a local optician who prescribes coloured overlays and then glasses
to a lot of children. They come back telling me they are dyslexic. I think
they are suffering if anything from scoptic sensitivity and yes, some are
also dyslexic - but it is confusing for everyone.
He also makes a lot of money as these glasses aren't cheap - but then I'm
just an old cynic.
I did my dyslexia diploma in 1998 and am more and more unsure of what it is
and if it exists................
