Article: [senco-forum] ASD diagnosis

Hi Brendan
Are there LAs which give schools money to support pupils with a medical diagnosis of ASD? Mine certainly doesn't. No statement - no linked money. Just a share of a very small 'additional resource delegated to the school'.
And the Ed Psych didn't presume to diagnose anything. It was a referral to those who could diagnose with detailed reasons.
Am I supposed to stop saying 'suspected ASD' until I have a formal diagnosis because I am not qualified to diagnose? If so, I've got a real problem as the last formal referral for ASD still has not had a complete assessment over 18 months after his mum contacted the GP.

But an EP isn't qualified anyway to make a positive or negative diagnosis of ADHD. This is likely to be an LA strategy of trying to keep the numbers of ADHD's down for budgetry reasons. The EP should be questioned as to his/her qualification to diagnose a medical disorder -- and also for parent to request a GP referral to the local CAMHS -- if the childs behaviour continues to be a matter of significant concern. Cheers Brendan King

Hello When discussing the diagnosis of ASD using a checklist, I wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience to me. We were told that a pupil with diagnosed ADHD did not have ASD as a result of a completed parental checklist. The referral was made by our Ed Psych. We were not asked to complete a checklist. Amanda Secondary SENCO Cornwall Amanda Secondary SENCO Cornwall
