Hi Philippa, The Listening Program/TLP is only one of the auditory training interventions that are used for APD but that like any other, may show some gains to varying degrees but which in the most part thesemay be temporary, needing annual retraining to reboot the auduitory processing system. I'm sure you were informed that there is a need to use a different set of CDs for those with hyperacusis as those with hyperacuisis can find the standard TLP distressing, painful and disorientating. If not I wpouldrequest a set for any children you come across who you wixch to pout on TLP and who suffer in this way. TLP can also undo existing coping strategies, especially in older learners who have developed them and rely on them; it can leave these users temporarily quite debilitated and unable to process auditorily at all for some time. Greater benefits are seen in younger children who have had less time to develop such unique strategies. These often involve using other parts of the brain and other modalities to compensate for their auditory processing deficits... as seen in the brain scans of those termed dyslexic who cope in this way...it is not as some would have you believe because "dyslexics" brains work differently, it is just that those who have auditory or visual processing issues use different parts of their brains in order to be able to cope, often from birth such as those with a strong visual/photographic memory and develop coping mechanisms often unknown to them... it was a shock to my son to find out he has a photographic memory and that he lipreads. It must be noted that auditory training-indeed anything that is meant to retrain neural pathways, effectively tampering with the way the brain works- is not to be uindertaken lightly.
