I go along with what has been said about in-ear varieties. There is also a problem with the types that use the soft, sound-deadening ear-muffs  - they create a pockets of moisture around each ear - the ideal conditions for ear infections.

I have always found the best to be the 'walkman-type' that are also used is aeroplanes. The sound reproduction may not reproduce the sound quality of the very expensive ones but they are more than adequate for most purposes and they are inexpensive to replace.

I think the most important thing about headphones is that they should always incorporate an individual  volume control.
