Hi Martin Haskayne is definitely the right person to speak to about nurture groups. He did a secondary nurture group in Wigan, but now works as the national training manager for the Nurture Group Network, part time and for Wigan Behaviour Support. He recently run a confernec eon NGs in secondary schools, so will be able to send info., etc. I'd also recommend that you look at the Nurutre Group website www.nurturegroups.org. I work for the NGN which is a charity, providing training, support etc for Nurture Groups. Anyone can call their nurture group a nurture group, we haven't patentetd the name in any way, and we know that nurture groups run in numerous range of ways, and settings, the important thing is that they are nurturing. The Quality Mark award can be applied for by any school that runs a nurture group and is a member of the nurture group network. . Further information from info at signalong.org.uk ___________________________________ 2. Therapeutic Storywiting course Therapeutic Storywriting for pupils with emotional and behavioural difficulties at Key stage 2 & 3 to be held in Brighton next month. The 3-day course is practice-based and was developed with the support of the South-east region SEN partnership. The approach helps pupils to contain difficult emotions while also developing writing skills - it is particularly useful for reluctant writers! For more information see http://www.therapeuticstorywriting.com ___________________________________ 3. SEMERC and nferNelson showcase Phoneme Factory series Inclusive software specialists, SEMERC, and assessment publisher, nferNelson, have recently unveiled the Phoneme Factory series to help children in their listening and awareness of speech sounds. Developed in conjunction with the Speech and Language Therapy Research Unit (SLTRU) Bristol, nferNelson's Phoneme Factory Phonology Screener is a digital screener that helps teachers and SENCOs detect phonological difficulties in children aged between 4 - 8 years. The tests are colourful and lively, and each ends with praise and encouragement for the child before they move on to the next. The end result is a comprehensive report that details the child's phonological development stage and recommends appropriate corrective action. A companion CD-ROM, the Phoneme Factory Sound Sorter, was developed simultaneously by SEMERC to address the problems identified by the screener. It contains interactive activities to develop children's listening skills and awareness of sounds in speech. The report generated by the screener automatically recommends Sound Sorter activities that are most suited to each child. You will be able to see the series in action at the forthcoming Naplic Conference (16 June, Institute of Education, London), as well as hear from author Yvonne Wren from the Speech and Language Therapy Research Unit (SLTRU) Bristol. "Well, actually I don't," said the student, "but I hate to see you standing up there all by yourself." "Haven't I seen your face before?" a judge demanded, looking down at the defendant. "Toughest spelling test I ever had." --------------------------------- The ways to grade the final exams Dept of Statistics: All grades are plotted along the normal bell curve. Dept of Psychology: Students are asked to blot ink in their exam books, close them and turn them in. The professor opens the books and assigns the first grade that comes to mind. Dept of History: All students get the same grade they got last year. Dept of Religion: Grade is determined by God. Dept of Philosophy: What is a grade? Law School: Students are asked to defend their position of why they should receive an A. Dept of Logic: If and only if the student is present for the final and the student has accumulated a passing grade then the student will receive an A else the student will not receive an A. Dept of Computer Science: Random number generator determines grade. Music Department: Each student must figure out his grade by listening to the instructor play the corresponding note (+ and - would be sharp and flat respectively). The Nurture Group Network are now getting very tough about their model and you can only be called a Nurture Group if you have got their quality mark as they have trademarked the title. Wigan run some excellent secondary nurture groups. You can see photographs of their rooms and set ups on the nurture group network website. They also give you titles of books that you can buy to help you develop a PSED Curriculum. See if you can contact Martin Haskayne directly through the nurture group network website. He runs a secondary nurture group in Wigan and came to talk to us in North Lincs about how to move forward into this area. The one I work in has been operating for 7 years and I am a firm believer in its ethos. We run it for 3-5 year olds so do strongly believe in Early Intervention. I think Martin would probably be your best bet. If you want anymore info please mail me off-site and I'll answer any questions you've got. The kind of screens used on laptops (LCD) should present no problem. There is a lot of info about this and I'm sure the Epilepsy association will respond very professionally. Secondary school pupils durinig growth spurts sometimes find that their prescriptions are no longer adequate and have to have the dose increased. This of course is something only their GP can do. I had a child with severe SEN needs in my infant school until the end of KS1 July 2006. He then was given a funded place at an independent school in our county. However he was permanently excluded from there at Easter. The LEA are looking at alternatives, but he is still at home at the moment. The parents do not have his records - which are substantial - and I feel that they have a right to keep possession of them until he can be found another placement. It is crucial that the records do not get 'mislaid'! Doe anyone have the answer please?
