Speech recognition systems require skills and involve mental processes that are very different compared with handwriting or keyboarding, so don't think of this in terms of a simple and easy substitute for writing. It's best to view speech recognition primarily as a means of being able to do extended writing, at least initially. One other solution you might like to explore first or along side this is 'touch typing' without having to look at the keyboard.
