So sorry to hear this Ruth.

Most viruses can be removed quite easily if not automatically using
the tools that come with your up-to-date virus checking software
...everyone does keep their's up to date, don't they?

Some IT consultants and computer retailers do however trade on the
fact viruses are scary and charge extortionate prices for the often
simple job of cleaning your system. Mind you if you don't know what
you are doing you can all to easily make a bad situation even worse
and potentially lose all your data, so this might be a small price to
pay when compared with the alternative.

The other main cause of data loss is hard disk failure and this can
happen at any time ...usually the worst possible time, or so it always
seems! So do regularly back up your most critical data. This is a lot
easier nowadays given plug-in USB flash or 'pen' drives are so cheap;
from less than £10 per gigabyte purchased on the Internet.
