Article: [senco-forum] Working with pupils with Asperger's as a career

I studied for my SLD/ASD /Aspergers quals at Brum Sch of Ed -- pre internet days -- books, journals and written lecture notes -- all on something then known as paper -- were the essential provisions in those days (80s). Wish the online approach had been available then. Had to be off school for a year and drive into Brum 5 times a week -- or to Baskerville / Ulfcumbe Schools?where we had hands on practice. Rita Jordan ran it then -- superb. Libraries and librarians were the key essentials then. I supose they still are --?but more in the backgound.. Hurrah for laptops, broadband, google and, even, Wikki (I know one can't quote Wikki -- unauthentic but it leads one there -- and nice summarry accounts to focus the brain). Go for Brum -- they have been at it virtually since?Aspergers was widely?known about in the UK. And Brum?have the best?the?specilaist ASD, maintanied schools to gain practice if you're in the W Mids.?They and Nottingham are the pioneers ( there may be others of course that I've not been aware of -- if so aplogies for overlooking them).

Birmingham University has online courses which will take her all the way from Certification, based on whatever work she may be doing right now (eg observing a child with autism in the classroom) to doctoral level. It's possible that the course is full up already for a January start - she can but ask. There are other little islands of great practice around the country - Sunderland, London, and Sheffield. She is welcome to contact me direct if she has any questions about the course. I can also put her in touch with relevant forums (write PERSONAL EMAIL in the subject line so I don't miss it). The best way to get started is to mix and mingle with people already working in the (research) field by going to regional or national conferences (eg as arranged by the National Autistic Society and local Austism groups). You find out the movers and shakers and the good places to work. There's a whole 'nother world out there with some wonderful specialist schools (mostly private which pay well!) and good specialist mainstream units. Hope that helps A
