Not sure of the solution, but he may not be aware he is humming or that he is humming loud or even aloud! Some people find it hard to hear the inner voice in their head i.e. cannot read 'in their head' as opposed to students who read aloud because it helps them comprehend better what they are reading. When I read it is with actual character voices or worse still a whole Margery Allingham/Campion read to me by the guy who plays Campion on TV. I might as well have got an audio book. For others there is nothing like that level of detail/input in much the same way as I struggle to visualise. So he may not be autistic at all and either way someone should have spoken to him. If he was there on his own he must have some level of independent skills and being a chicken I would have probably have asked one of the staff to have a word with him, if it was really bothering me.
