Well, it seems to me that if he cannot recognize the letters then this might be something to investigate? Or are you saying that he can recognize the letters, he just can't give you the name or sound? I would put a set of wooden or plastic letters in a feely bag and see if he can identify them by feeling without looking, or by feeling and looking together. That might help you work out if it's a visual recognition problem or a phonology problem. There's a list of behavioural optometrists at BABO.co.uk, and you can read about behavioural optometry there too. Also, Philippa has a useful sheet about it. See what you think when you've done a bit of investigating. Or even what a behavioural optometrist can do to help. Amanda Mary Kelly <mary.kelly4 at ntlworld.com> wrote: Has he had an assessment from a behavioural optometrist? Has anyone got anything to recommend for a Year 8 pupil who still cannot recognise letters (not by sound and not by name), is at P8 for reading and at P7 for writing? He has a statement and full-time TA support. Amanda Amanda Secondary SENCO Cornwall Amanda Secondary SENCO Cornwall |
