Out of interest, how would you have responded if you didn't think the person had any difficulties? Could you have adapted that response for this person? I've just asked my 27 yr old son who has Aspergers Syndrome how he would have like you to respond to him in this situation. His said he'd have liked you to turn round and attract his attention quietly and politely explain to him that his humming was disturbing you. He would have wither moved somewhere else of stopped humming. All he wanted was to be spoken to politely. He said he knows he doesn't always respond correctly in different situations and he would rather be told discretely so he could alter his behaviour rather than not understand why he upset/annoyed some people.
