We just listed desired voices for situations clearly somewhere in the classroom; practised them and then expected them to be followed. the list was usually: No voice (silence) Partner voice (quietly speaking to the person next to you) Table voice (just loud enough for others on the table to hear - one person speaking at a time if all 4/6 children working together) Class voice (when speaking for the whole class to hear, as in plenary sessions) Playground voice (this was to be used in the classroom only on particular occasions, as in storytelling/joining in with loud responses) A favourite phrase was "If the table next to you can hear you, you're too loud. If I can hear you - e.g when at the opposite side of the room - you are far too loud!" The children enjoyed these - especially seeing how quietly it was possible to talk and still by heard by a given number of people. Equally, great enjoyment was derived from raising the roof at the appropriate time - e.g when telling the story of the Exodus from Egypt and Pharaoh changed his mind 9 times and roared "No!" The silence when the tenth plague was being told was absolute, following nine lots of roaring!
