Janice
Do you need the course to be an accredited one?

Wouldn't that be good - anyway someone has told me about a course - part of ASDAN called COPE which I have been looking at - once I have ideas I will certainly post them on the forum. Already our school is playing with something called ALAN (OCR I think) which gives lower ability students half an Eng and half a Maths GCSE - but that's not what I want - I want life skills - let everyone know what I find out in due course

This is exacatly where I am with a child in year 9. His original statement just said Autisitic Spectrum disorder and assocaoted behavioural problems.

I have now had extensive assessments undertaken by an EP and SALT which actually ideidntifies him as MLD. This will account for the failed 2 placements prior to us. Both Boarding.

The problem is Mum insists on a Main school placement and won't even go and look at schools in there London Borough. (She drops him off on her way to work. we are 15 miles from his home).
I have no other students at the same level. Some of those who can't do all GCSE's will do College for 1 day a week on a vocational course in lieu of one option, but have to fit into the rest.

We are looking at running ASDAN main course and the one on Life Skills for perhaps a selected group, but Eng, maths, science, and RE will still be GCSE.

Can we put all our 1's togeher and teach them on-line?

Susie

I have a lad in Year 9 with a statement for speech and language.I just can' t see how he is going to cope with our academic curriculum at KS4 and we may have to look at the core subjects plus one option and spend the other 6 hours a week doing life skills and social communication skills.I am gathering information and may well go to special schools, units etc locally and am calling in the E.P. and SEN Connexions lady for their help.BUT - it occurred to me that some of you might know of a resource in these sorts of things, a book, a DVD, an online course or one you already use which we could steal/adapt etc. I can see a scenario when we 5 people in the SEN department work on these things with him in 1:1s and take him out on visits etc - I am planning way ahead you see.A college placement part-time might be a possibility too - not sure yet. Thanks in advance for any advice.JaniceJanice Wray Secondary SENCO, Herts_________________________________________________________________Feel like a local wherever you go.http://www.backofmyhand.com
