Possibly because there is little heed paid to slow writing ergo it must be slow processing! I use a battery for writing up to 20 minutes depending on age including : 5/10 minute free writing, writing own name for 1-2 minutes- familiar so no processing issues (xletters in name& divide by 5 for peer comparison) . ABC/abc to check relational sizing & sequencing as well as single letter speed (4 minutes in total) Days of the week/months (2-4 minutes), and a recited then written rhyme (recall) for 2 or 3 minutes I have started asking them to turn over and draw me a picture of themselves. This can be for info only or scored as per the Goodenough Draw a man Test. Overall it is 20 minutes well spent and gives really good idea of strengths/weaknesses/anomalies and can be done as a whole class test. The adding up and dividing by minutes or words is a pain. The gains from spending time looking at each child's way of writing cannot be underestimated. It gives a picture quite unlike any other piece of work. I have used it with Y3-6 so far and am developing some alternatives for the younger ones including the geometric drawing (Aston style). Afterwards the children go on to do Speed UP by Lois Addy (or just the exercises) or a similar programme that includes teaching of cursive writing or support for sequencing issues etc. Depends on what is needed. Also shows that the children have been monitored/supported so that there is evidence of need for later exam access arrangements. Latest Norms for Secondary writing tests are available from PATOSS. Sharon Subject: [senco-forum] Hedderley Ok, so why does Hedderley show SLOW processing. I can understand it shows slow handwriting but how can you possibly conclude, after using Heddeley sentence completion that there must be slow processing as an underlying cause? Surely one would have to do more tests like Phab to ensure slow processing is a root reason? My predecessors only used Hedderley and LASS to award it... please , help me out here!
