Article: [senco-forum] urgent help needed: assessing for extra time.

Dear All,
I am in a quandary and would welcome some advice. I have a yr 10 girl who is sitting GCSE science modules very soon. She regularly runs out of time in exams and has done so more or less all the way in 2dry school. She completed the WRAT E in the time limit, writes at an average rate when tested on 20 mins free writing. I think she reads silently at an average rate - as far as I can tell and understands reasonably well what she reads.
If I give her a subject based writing task - as opposed to free writing- her writing speed drops dramatically - to something like less than 10wpm (actual figs at school). Her english teacher (who has certificate OCR in SP LD and also teaches learning support) feels that she needs extra time - her gut reaction based on knowing her & how she works.
Can I allow her extra time and if so - how do I prove it?
I often have 1 or 2 pupils who have a history of running our of time and whose time management seems ok - but they complete the Edinburgh and WRAT E in time and have average writing speed scores? Any ideas - you wonderful people.
The free writing scores are all well and good, I find, but they don't really mimic the sorts of tasks which the kids face in exams - where processing is involved.
I do have PHAB and haven't tried her on this as yet - I will do but chances are she will be fine on this as well.
  Thanks, in hope,
  Janet
