If the fold is down the middle, joining two sheets of A4/larger card with gaffer tape/similar, with a space between the two pieces to be the fold would be fairly durable. Any lamination/use of sticky-back plastic would need to be after cutting out shape and before joining sides. I hope this makes sense. You can get matte laminating pouches. An Art supply shop should have a wide variety of card, from photocopy weight to almost like plywood. Strong, sharp Stanley or craft knife needed for latter, or even a small saw!
