Article: [senco-forum] setting and streaming

I don't know what the proper word to use - but I've found that my daughters school puts children into groups for all of their literacy and numeracy sessions - they reckon that it's for 50% of the time. My estimate is that it's more. This is a year one class - my daughter is 5. I'm having the conversation about her literacy needs as she seems to have some language and literacy difficulties - which is like d?j? vu as my oldest son (now 16) has (severe) dyslexia and is dyspraxic and has some language difficulties. It was suggested that I could take her out of school and go the the Dyslexia Institute for some support!

Not sure it's a good idea. In my lunchtime warhammer club the most time
consuming pupils are the four ASD boys who have no empathy or tolerence for
each other.

Sounds like the easy option but ... Won't tolerance of rest of class be very
over stretched , won't they possibly be even more intolerant of each other
than 'neuro normals' would be and shouldn't more of the year group be
exposed to 'inclusion'
isn't this a chance to educate teaching staff and year group ? Barbara ht

I understand that from this year one of the dispensations allowed is an
"oral language modifier". It is not very clear yet exactly what this role
will involve but my understanding is that the adult can interpret the key
language in questions for the pupil as long as they record on the
dispensation sheet which words they have interpreted. I am hoping that this
may make a real difference for pupils with ASD and Speech and Lang
difficulties.

My understanding is that the "carrier language" can be explained but the
subject associated vocabulary cannot be changed or explained. It also
sounds as if training may be available for those intending to carry out this
role.

Hi I couldn't find Mary's address so I'm just replying directly to you and
the forum Sheridan.

I am currently working as SENCo in an International school in Mauritius and
assessment was only accessible to Psychologists a few years ago and should
the need arise for a student to be assessed, we used to recommend it to the
parents who would then decide to bring the child for an assessment usually
abroad to South Africa or UK. So reading your message reminds me how we
started here but the difference is that we don't have to translate tests it
would be even harder for you.

I have followed a distance learning course on assessment from real training
(The certificate of Competence in Educational Testing Level A).I only have
to submit a port folio to complete it now.It was really interesting and I
feel really confident in administering tests now.
I use the WRIT, WRAT 4 , some components of the Bangor Dyslexia test and
assessments I have downloaded from the Dyslexia Action Web site (recommended
by the forum). I am planning to buy the CTOPP next year.
For screening, we have decided what we wanted to assess and have designed
our own screening from different sources. This screening is given to our
students at entrance as a fun activity and is called "test your detective
skills" It in fact assesses observation skills, writing skills (Hand
writing, spelling , punctuation etc.), Maths skills, copying skills,
laterality , following instructions , fine motor coordination skills etc. We
then write short recommendations for teachers. We also have the SNAP that we
use sometimes.
I have also bought the CERIUM visual technologies overlays pack which
contains a test to check which coloured overlay suits best the SEN
student. We then either give the child that coloured overlay for use in class
or print any work on same coloured paper.
It took us some time but we are now more or less settled.Wish you all the
best Mary.
Regards
Sonia
