Hi Ruth I absolutely agree with you. In a perfect world, all children would respond to good teaching. Some pupils can't and persistently disrupt those who are willing to 'have a go', which is the way I present the idea of trying a task which needs thought to my pupils. Sometimes I need to remove a pupil from a class in order to enable the rest to learn - and, often, that pupil themselves learns better when they return to a class which feels 'in their comfort zone' with a task they have been better able to focus on. I would also be very uncomfortable with a Learning and Behaviour Unit which is deviod of stimulation. The point of ours is that it is actually a nice, comfortable room with a high level of adult support. The reason the kids don't like it is that they are not allowed to leave it during the day. Some tell us that they like it during lessons because they can focus on their work better. Yes it is an hour and a half drive - but look up the hotel on the internet, look at the view over Morgan Porth Beach and see why I choose to live in Cornwall! Ruth Newbury <rmnewbury at ntlworld.com> wrote: There comes a time - when all have us have had the experiences of endless people being "nice - supportive - and everything else that goes with it". And you try something else. And for many children - an isolation room - a sin bin - or an inclusion unit run in that way will work for many students too. One of the major "crimes" in my eyes is preventing other children from working - and finding an effective response to the needs of the individual weighed against the needs of the many is something that every school has to sort out - and invariably their solutions come down to money and resourcing - and very often space. The one thing about these students is that they demonstrate their individual needs on a daily - and sometimes on an every five minute basis. My most serious problems were always with those poor souls who were silent - and sat their daily - frozen up inside - and learning not a lot!
