I've found that one of the main stumbling blocks the children I initially "pick up" have with blending phonics is their learned habit of adding a schwa to the letters. Schwa being the "u" sound they add to the letter sound eg. "m" is pronounced - "muh" instead of "mmmm" that "u" interferes with their processing because they hear the extra sound then have to remove it again and then blend. This makes their learning inefficient. That is why some find it difficult for them to blend consonants. They'll say ful, bul etc nd and mp usually becomes mup and nud . Undo their errors and relearn phonics without the schwa and many find it so much easier to blend sounds. It’s a shame so many early years children are still learning phonics with the letters incorrectly sounded out. People like me spend so much time having to go back to basics even at secondary level.
