"I've found that one of the main stumbling blocks the
children I initially "pick up" have with blending
phonics is their learned habit of adding a
schwa to the letters."
Maybe not so popular any more, but I found that THRASS
helped a lot to show the distinct pronunciation of
phonemes.
It can also help younger children who need the " big
picture", giving all the spelling choices for each
phoneme in one go. I suspect it may help in reading
more than spelling. I have seen some success with
older children, up to yr 8. Although like everything
else, it doesn't suit everyone.
I know phonetic purists don't like it but try it,
surely whatever works cannot be bad.
But don't push phonics if it is blatantly obvious it
is failing, as the child will be put in a permanent
state of faiulure and that isn't good.
Best wishes,
Aly
