I think the AMBDA status is important because it shows that you have proved yourself both as a teacher and as a teacher of SpLD Dyslexia. It is a benchmark that says you have a certain amount of hours under your belt recognising and actually supporting learners to learn successfully- this is what parents want to see and what some students need. When I went to tribunal I asked for 2 hours 1:1 with a specialist teacher with AMBDA status. Originally I would have settled for a monkey if they had had a Dyslexia Diploma (not all are qualified teachers) but the LA were insisting on a qualified teacher, but one with any SEN qualification. For example this could have been someone with a superior academic qualification (MA) but no experience of teaching SpLD dyslexia! To me this was not a step up from it being a TA running a set dyslexia programme. If this had bought about no progress thus far why was the result going to change just because the teacher had better academic qualifications! I'm really glad they have studied the theory, it is a small step forward, but I was fed up with my child being used as a guinea pig. So specifying AMBDA meant there was no 'wiggle' room and we would finally get someone who knew what they were doing and could very quickly get my daughter on the right track. Tribunal agreed and now she is doing very well indeed. AMBDA all the way!
