Article: [senco-forum] hearing loss and literacy skills

Dr Lindsay Peer did a study on this and found that, of 1000 children with
dyslexia, 702 had a history of glue ear.

Hi
from my own experience, a few things that might help(sorry if it is not very
coherent as it is quite early in the morning!):
there may be a delay in starting to say their first words
they miss initial sounds when speaking (=ife instead of knife) or they
change them (b instead of P)
when you ask a question there is a delay in answering it
sitting too close to the tv
may play by themselves because they can't hear the others very well
some children try to lip read-they will look at you when you are talking
they often have colds +a runny nose+earaches
they may complain of 'muzzy ears', 'my ears crackle' etc. Without getting
too technical glue ear is chronical otitis (a build up of fluid in the
middle ear). It does not often go away by itself. It normally gets better
after an operation (gromets) but some children need more than one and in a
few cases they continue to have problems. It really needs to be detected
early, because it causes a lot of problems. I have met a few cases of
'dyslexia', where glue ear was present.
