Dr Lindsay Peer did a study on this and found that, of 1000 children with dyslexia, 702 had a history of glue ear. It does not often go away by itself. It normally gets better after an operation (gromets) but some children need more than one and in a few cases they continue to have problems. It really needs to be detected early, because it causes a lot of problems. I have met a few cases of 'dyslexia', where glue ear was present. luisa > Date: Fri, 5 Oct 2007 05:56:19 +0400> From: bodien at gmail.com> To: senco-forum at lists.becta.org.uk> Subject: [senco-forum] hearing loss and literacy skills> > Just recently we have identified two Y2 children with significant hearing> loss due to glue ear that seems to have impacted on their literacy skills.> Neither child was showing any obvious signs.> > One fits the criteria for dyslexia and one does not.> > My suspicion is that these two are just the tip of a very large iceberg,> given the prevalence of antibiotics for ear infections.> > Does anyone have an information sheet for parents on spotting hearing loss> and getting it checked out by a doctor?> > One of the mums I spoke to said that once the dr explained her son's> symptoms to her it all made so much sense.> > Philippa _________________________________________________________________ The next generation of MSN Hotmail has arrived - Windows Live Hotmail http://www.newhotmail.co.uk= |
