Hi Philippa You are absolutely right about this being the tip of the iceberg as it is estimated that one in 3 children will have at least one episode of glue ear during their lives and that at any time, about 25% of pupils in an Early Years classroom won't be able to hear properly. As for information for parents, the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) have all sorts of information that can be downloaded from their website. Alternatively, if you contact me off forum, I can send you some through the post. Hope this helps Kind regards Angie Reese Specialist Teacher of the Deaf Nuffield Hearing and Speech Centre Royal National Throat Nose and Ears Hospital Gray's Inn Road London WC1X 8DA -----Original Message----- From: senco-forum-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk [mailto:senco-forum-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk] On Behalf Of Paul and Philippa Bodien Sent: 05 October 2007 02:56 To: senco forum Subject: [senco-forum] hearing loss and literacy skills Just recently we have identified two Y2 children with significant hearing loss due to glue ear that seems to have impacted on their literacy skills. Neither child was showing any obvious signs. One fits the criteria for dyslexia and one does not. My suspicion is that these two are just the tip of a very large iceberg, given the prevalence of antibiotics for ear infections. Does anyone have an information sheet for parents on spotting hearing loss and getting it checked out by a doctor? One of the mums I spoke to said that once the dr explained her son's symptoms to her it all made so much sense. Philippa |
