Article: [senco-forum] hearing loss and literacy skills

If it is of any help, when I did the SEN Diploma, we had some input from
the Head of a school for the deaf - shows how long ago that was: deaf, not
hearing impaired! He played us tapes of how speech sounded to those with
particular hearing problems; he described those with glue ear as hearing
sounds as though they were under water, which is just what the tape of
this condition sounded like!

He also said that, for a lot of children, hearing loss due to glue ear
improves greatly once the child reaches 7 years of age, as the facial
bones increase in size then and the passages that previously got affected
by the "glue ear" became wide enough not to be affected in the same way.
Of course, there are always those who will suffer from conductive hearing
loss beyond this age.

Have you tried the National Deaf Children's Society?

  www.ndcs.org.uk

They have lots of information and helpful booklets.

Hope this is of use,

Regards

Just recently we have identified two Y2 children with significant hearing
> loss due to glue ear that seems to have impacted on their literacy skills.
> Neither child was showing any obvious signs.
>
> One fits the criteria for dyslexia and one does not.
>
> My suspicion is that these two are just the tip of a very large iceberg,
> given the prevalence of antibiotics for ear infections.
>
> Does anyone have an information sheet for parents on spotting hearing loss
> and getting it checked out by a doctor?
>
> One of the mums I spoke to said that once the dr explained her son's
> symptoms to her it all made so much sense.
