Ah - nice one at Hull ... Not all are like this - I get the students to phone Univ during their last year at school to check their 'chosen' Uni - also give them DSA info and inform them that Uni's may want an adult i.e. post 16 report. Tis best to have all the info available prior to Univ -if at all possible, that way all the arrangements are in place asap. So, top marks for Hull, but check on an individual basis. For DSA - post 12 report in Scotland is fine - and for some Univ's a full Ed Psych report pre-16 say at age 15 can also do if Univ sees it first. All the best sTuart -----Original Message----- From: senco-forum-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk [mailto:senco-forum-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk] On Behalf Of SEN at tringham.net Sent: 10 October 2007 08:58 To: WrayJanice Wray; Becta Senco Subject: RE: [SENco-forum] Post 16 and SpLD No need to assess prior to Uni. Call the Uni and speak to the Student Disability Office or their Psychology department. They usually screen all 1st years using a computerised test such as Quick Scan. Those with anomalies go on to use the 3 hour test Study Scan. After this they are assessed by an EP. If you alert the Uni prior to starting they put the student at the front of the list. It is not in their interest to let students fail and supporting them adequately costs them nothing because the Student Disability Allowance is paid to the Uni by the Student's LA. A refreshing approach and one that needs to be extended to all student's regardless of age! This set-up is definitely the case at Hull and my daughter, having been in denial, had to face the fact that she had dyslexia. She struggled through the first year unsupported but it did nothing for her confidence. Post assessment she now has individual and group support. A second assessment for communications aids has recommended a computer with Dragon and a processing package similar to TextHELP, printer, scanner and a digital voice to text recorder. On top of this she gets £200 towards coloured paper etc., and books/audio books, or whatever she needs to aid her learning. Student Disability Allowance is marvellous. I don't know why it is not available earlier! It would have saved a fraught 2 years of 'A' levels and a nightmare Gap year because she knew she was not able/capable for more study. This in spite of a 150 IQ! The small amount spent now (or preferably earlier) will be more than recouped in the higher amounts of tax she will end up pay when she has her graduate level job. As part of the House of Commons SEN Select committee enquiry I have suggest that SDA is rolled out for FE and younger students. The assessment procedure and speed of implementation is far quicker than the Statutory Assessment procedure we have currently. My daughter was assessed twice and both reports were back within 2 weeks and her dyslexia support started right away. Sharon PS I did try to direct her to Bangor(Tim Miles) or Sheffield (Angela Fawcett) where I knew they were doing a lot of Dyslexia research (!) hoping that she might get more support or understanding. However I was lucky that she ended up at Hull where Chris Singleton & the Lucid Cops research bunch are based. -----Original Message----- From: senco-forum-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk [mailto:senco-forum-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk] On Behalf Of WrayJaniceWray Sent: 09 October 2007 17:10 To: senco forum Subject: [senco-forum] Post 16 and SpLD I have a lad in Year 13 who is looking at universities. He is dyslexic but the assessment is quite old.... No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition.
