Hi Tim This is exactly what we do for pupils with ASD and for some other pupils with different sorts of SEN. I have very positive feed back from parents about this process. Photos are an excellent idea. We have pictures on our website where you can click on a room on the plan and see a picture. Do other schools do the same? My son, Autistic Spectrum, was very concerned about moving to the High School and so we contacted the SENCo there and went on several visits before the normal transition days. He got more of a feel for the place this way. The best thing we did at this point was to get a camera and go around the school taking photos of various places in the school that were going to be important to him in the coming years. We gave him the responsibility of putting these photographs into an order that was meaningful to him. In the end he decided to use a map of the school and stick the photos close to where those places were on the map. At the end of the day the strength of this was that he felt much more comfortable with the transition as he had already pictured the locations that he was going to be studying in prior to starting at the High School. He is now undergoing transfer to the next stage, but we believe that this will be more straightforward, mainly due to his increased maturity in some areas. I will ask the EP etc but wonder if anyone out there had experience of how to assist transition for such a lad. He has 20+ hours of TA support apparently including playtimes. I'd like to help calm his fearsJanice WraySecondary SENCO, Herts _________________________________________________________________ Celeb spotting Play CelebMashup and win cool prizes https://www.celebmashup.com= Amanda Secondary SENCO Cornwall |
