  I have often met mum, dad, plus one new partner at parents' evenings.  And once even four 'parents' all amiably working together to support the child.  I have also met had two appointments in one evening about a child as mum and dad could not cope with each other!

  As for parents, yes, I'm quite sure many of them are horrendous as are people in every walk of life. However, Sheridan's comments make me particularly glad that I always - pointedly - include my ex-husband (the "real" father) as well as my future husband (presumably, by Sheridan's reckoning, the "pretend" father) in all school matters. I would be horrified if staff at my son's school could not see past our titles and brought their own prejudices into dealings with our family. 
  I'm sure it's a rare family that has not at least one step parent somewhere in its fabric, whether because of divorce or death.
